Why Cinetyp

The First.

Nearly 90 years ago, we pressed our first subtitles into the celluloid of every single film reel using heated stamps. Since then, we have subtitled countless films, series, short films and trailers and kept pace with every technical change – from stamps to lasers to today's digital subtitling.

Pioneer

Cinetyp is a pioneer in subtitling.

In 1937, Cinetyp was founded as Switzerland's first subtitling company. In a country with four national languages, subtitling has always been an important part of local film culture. Over the decades, we developed and sold our own subtitling machines, including to Hollywood and Tel Aviv.

Today we work with a dedicated team of translators and can draw on decades of expertise.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Can't find your question? Give us a call or send us a message.

How much does subtitling cost?

The price depends mainly on the film length, the languages and whether subtitles already exist. Enter these details in the form – you will receive a quote.

Which languages do you translate into?

Among others German, French, English, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese – and many more. Translations are always done into the translator's native language.

Which formats do you deliver?

All common subtitle formats, for example XML, SRT, STL, RTF or TXT. We can also convert existing files into another format.

Can you adapt existing subtitles?

Yes. We adjust timecodes, apply offsets, split or merge reels, combine monolingual lists into a bilingual cinema version and export multilingual subtitles as individual languages.

What is the Swiss cinema standard?

In Swiss cinemas, many films are shown with bilingual subtitles: one line in German, one line in French – just like in our example at the top of this page.

Why aren't subtitles translated word for word?

Because subtitles have little space and little time. Depending on the format, a line holds only 40 to 52 characters and has to be read in one to two seconds – while people often speak much faster. We condense what is said to its essence while keeping the meaning, tone and humour of the original.

Why does a subtitle end abruptly at a cut?

That's intentional. If a subtitle stays on screen across a cut, the eye notices the cut and reads the text a second time – as if it were a new subtitle. During spotting, we therefore time the start and end of each subtitle to match the cuts. That keeps the viewer's attention on the film.

How do I send you the film material?

The easiest way is a download link, for example via WeTransfer. You can enter the link directly in the enquiry form.
